Influence of the core permeability on the armour layer stability

Daan Jumelet

expected completion: April 2010

Research question:
Is it possible to give a more precise relation between the notional permeability coefficient P of VAN DER MEER [1988] and the composition of the breakwater with existing theories and investigations?

Hypothesis:
A lot of existing research will be useful for this study, but in order to determine more precise values and relations of the notional permeability coefficient, additional research and laboratory tests are required. This research gives more insight for possible follow-up studies/tests.

Problem definition:
The notional permeability coefficient P in the formulae of VAN DER MEER [1988] has an empirical character, because it is determined by curve fitting for three different compositions of the structure. Consequently the permeability coefficient has no physical background and a specific design value of P for a deviating structure cannot be determined. Since the permeability largely influences the stability relation, a more precise value of P is important. For a more specific relation between the permeability coefficient P and the composition of the breakwater, it is necessary to get more insight into the influence of the core permeability on the armour layer stability. This could be achieved with additional model tests or existing test results, but it should be kept in mind that during these tests scale effects will occur.
